Who are you?
I am a human, an individual, who is endlessly curious about life and about looking. About zooming in and zooming out, about finding poetry, about freezing the small minute things that make our existence meaningful.
What is your creative area of expertise?
Painting. Raw pigment ground in oil, applied to a surface. Nothing will ever replace this, and painting will never become obsolete. AI will make painting better, just like every other previous technology.
Main inspiration?
Life. Marcel Proust. Cinema. All of the past art.
Tell us a little bit about the work you chose to share
This work was made specifically for this Gala Auction. It is based off of a still from behind the scenes of the filming of The Night Porter (1974, directed by Liliana Cavani). The film is about a woman who bumps into her former concentration camp guard that works as a night porter in the hotel that she is staying in with her husband. It is set around 12 years after WWII. The woman and the guard begin a very disturbing relationship.
The film has been in my consciousness for many years, but has recently again been relevant. Actually, I don’t want to say too much about the personal meaning and the reason for this image and content.
What is your work process?
I work a lot. Around six days a week. Always trying to find, produce and create new imagery. There is not direct 1+1 process. Hard to articulate, it’s not direct and has no linear structure.
One special moment that happened to you this year
This whole past year has been special. Within this horrific period, to create, and to keep working and showing. There were some special moments with special people. Some intimate moments, some openings, simple evening with beautiful food. All of this with a pain.
A piece of advice
Be curious, be passionate, look at the world, move around. Don’t be satisfied, be humble and honest.
What’s next?
2025 will be amazing: Project at Isetan the Space in Tokyo, Solo show at Asia Art Center Taipei, solo show at Galerie Lelong Paris. Also, museum group shows, fairs, and other projects.
