Since 2001 BFAMI has been highlighting the work of a major female artist during the annual Women in Art Lunch. For this year’s Lunch, we had the pleasure of honouring Marina Abramović who was in conversation with Tim Marlow, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. BFAMI partnered once again with Viennese Auction House, Dorotheum, following their support of last year’s lunch honouring Jenny Holzer RA.
Prior to the conversation, the 350 guests who attended the event enjoyed a pop-up exhibition at the Dorchester showing a selection of artworks by Abramović. The exhibition was produced and supported by Lisson Gallery. The whole event was also supported by Wedgwood, 45 Park Lane and Hotel Danieli, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice.
Abramović enchanted the crowd while speaking of her seminal works, the contemporary art world and why she refuses to define herself as a feminist. She also talked about her recent interest in sculpture, which she will further explore at the Royal Academy during her solo exhibition in 2020. Prior to the lunch, Marina met with Maïa Morgensztern, BFAMI head of Cultural Programme for a special interview.
Listen to Marina speak about the birth of performance art, the lack of women artists, and what she wants to be remembered for:
Thanks to the generous supporters, donors and sponsors BFAMI managed to raise more than £150,000. The proceeds for this year’s Lunch will support educational programmes run by the Art Museums of Israel. This year we highlighted 2 main projects:
Women2Women Project at the Petach Tikva Museum of Art – will serve as a unique opportunity to spark a meaningful connection between Jewish and Arab artists and craftswomen who live side by side under constant conflict.
Classroom Renovation project at Mishkan Ein Harod – will transform a storage space into a new multipurpose classroom. This will allow the museum to expand its educational programmes and increase the number of participants from Israel’s periphery
