Once I Dreamt and Here I am in Africa

Nahum Gutman Museum – Opens 22 September 2025

Within the walls of his home on 136 Ahad Ha’am Street in Tel Aviv, alongside everyday life, imaginary stories were woven that became classic works. Nahum Gutman’s dream of traveling to Africa became a reality: he traveled to Africa, met the Prime Minister of South Africa, General Jan Christiaan Smuts, a painter, a writer, and turned himself into an adventurer and a treasure hunter.

But the story does not end there. Another inspiring incident occurred when Nahum and his son Hemi painted together – an imaginary Africa full of elephants, lions and wars, as well as biblical stories: storms, big fish and rebellious prophets. Their paintings, like his writings, intertwine reality and imagination, dream and action, and have inspired many generations.
